Artist Biography
Andrew Raczynski, a resident of Morinville, Alberta since 1981, works in a variety of media in a representational style that reflects his diverse interests in landscape, portraiture and still life. He has exhibited his paintings at St. Albert Place, the Hemingway Centre, the Art Gallery of St. Albert (AGSA), Gallery 7 (Bookstore on Perron), Art Beat Gallery, the St. Albert Outdoor Market, Centre des Arts Visuels de l’Alberta (CAVA), and the Morinville Community Cultural Centre.

Personal highlights include a nomination for the St. Albert Cultivates the Arts Award for Excellence in Arts Teaching (2010), a People’s Choice Award at the St. Albert Painters Guild Spring Show (2013), and participation in St. Albert’s Cultivate Life Mural Mosaic (2012), the Canada 150 Mural Mosaic (2017) and Sturgeon County’s Centennial Mural Mosaic (2018).

Andrew’s introduction to the Muse began at age seven, while tuning in weekly to a Regina TV station to “Learn to draw with Jon Gnagy,” His formal art education includes intensive studies at Red Deer College (Summer-Scape series) and the University of Alberta Extension (Visual Arts Certificate program), as well as workshops as an active member of local art associations. His subject matter and style reflect the influence of John Constable, John Singer Sargent, and Walter J. Phillips - to name a few, and the mentorship of distinguished Alberta artists Jerry Heine and James Davies.

Andrew is a member of the Visual Arts Studio Association (of St. Albert) – VASA, the St. Albert Painters Guild, Arts and Heritage (St. Albert), Visual Arts Alberta (CARFAC), and Centre des Arts Visuels de l’Alberta (CAVA). His paintings are represented in private collections in Canada, Japan and Switzerland.
Artist Statement
Andrew’s current focus on watercolour media exemplifies a passion for gardening, a love of the land and the cultural diversity of its inhabitants engaged in ordinary, everyday pursuits that underscore the ‘extraordinary’ in a frenetic world that needs to pause now and then to smell the roses. His ‘genre painting’ themes are illustrated by the use of pen and ink, graphite and charcoal marks, varying applications of paint with a variety of brushes and tools, and reductive techniques - and, quite frankly, anything else that works.
Art Instruction Experience
Andrew has taught art from grades six to twelve with the St. Albert Catholic School District, the last five years (2006-2011) at St. Albert Catholic High School, where a number of his award-winning students advanced to study in post-secondary institutions in Canada and abroad, and currently engaged in meaningful, successful careers in the fine arts, fashion, photography and design. He has also developed monographs for use in guided workshops to beginning teachers and International Baccalaureate art seminars.
Adjudication Experience
He has adjudicated the art works of senior high school International Baccalaureate art students at St. Albert Catholic High School and both junior and senior high works of art at Morinville schools. He continues to adjudicate the Annual Remembrance Day Poster Contest entries on behalf of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #271, St. Albert (since 2011).
